The extremely rare first edition (Printed for the India Office, by Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1866) of a comprehensive account of textile manufacturers and people of India related to the trade of clothmaking and designing of the apparel industry. The author John Forbes Watson was a Scottish physician and writer who extensively studied the rich diversity of Indian textiles and traditional attire. Over the course of a decade, he went on to publish elaborate descriptions and showcased regional samples of Indian textiles in his monumental 18-volume work.
This lovely copy is complete with 12 beautiful plates, of which 9 are mounted composite albumen prints (8 of them hand-coloured), 2 lithographed and one chromolithographed.
The handcoloring is stunning and the plates are virtually spotless, although there exists one unobtrusive small ink library stamp on every plate. Please note that this is an ex-library copy with library stamps and labels to front free endpaper and pastedown.
Condition – Very Good+ folio in 20th century roan-backed cloth with light finger-soiling to title, creasing and tear to endpaper. Pages are internally clean and crisp.
