About this Book

The first English translation of a rare philosophical treatise of ancient India–the Sankhyakarika by Ishvara Krishna (350 CE) and its most important commentary, the Bháshya, by Gaudapada. This translation is accompanied by a full Sanskrit text of the original composition. First edition, folio (280 x 225 mm) printed for the Oriental Translation Fund of Great Britain and Ireland, by S. Collingwood, Printer to the University, Oxford, 1837. Pages are bright and unmarked, publisher’s unremarkable cloth with paper label to spine. Very good to near fine.

Henry Thomas Colebrooke (1765-1837) is among the preeminent Sanskrit scholars who resided in Calcutta and devoted their lives to the study of seminal Sanskrit texts and their translation to European languages, mainly English. Two of his most remarkable contributions include the Sanskrit grammar and Essay on The Vedas, both works published in 1805.

Horace Hayman Wilson (1786-1860) was the first Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University. He is famous in oriental literature as the first person to translate the Rigveda into English. He was secretary to the Asiatic Society of Bengal and the director of The Royal Asiatic Society from 1837 until his death.
