An extremely scarce manuscript of the revered Jain text The Sangrahani Sutra, illustrated with vivid images, Circa 1846 or earlier. The folio is profusely illustrated with Devanagari and Sanskrit scripts in ink and gouache on paper, with illuminations, some pages in diagrammatic format, others with varying script size. 46 pp., double-sided and disbound, vivid coloration and clear texts.

The manuscript is in its original paper cover and the folio is in horizontal rectangular form.

Shri Sangrahani (Shangrahani) Sutram, or The Sangrahani Sutra, is a cosmological text composed in 1136 by Srichandra that includes Jain ideas about the structure of the universe and the mapping of space. Srichandra summarized a sixth-century text by Jinabhadragani and the text is considered to be one of the earliest depictions of the universe amongst the Jain and north-Indian traditional religions.  With the Sun and Moon as centrally important “characters” of the Sutra, the text intersperses the various realms of existence, the structure of the cosmos, and the characteristics and lifespans of living beings (including humans) within these realms.

Condition- Fair to Good. Colors are generally bright with paper flaws as usual, consistent with age, in unrestored condition. One folio torn, affecting the text (see images). Upper corner of another page torn but present. A possible date of “samvat 1903”, i.e., 1846, for the manuscript, is written in ink on the verso of the back cover.
