About this Book
A rare and important re-publication of Handel’s masterpiece by H. Wright of London; circa 1784, engraved title page, subscribers’ list (two pages), 208 pages of lavishly engraved musical score, large folio with modern half calf gilt. Some pages with notations and scores crossed out in red ink.
Originally composed in three acts in 1746, Handel’s celebrated oratorio Judas Maccabeus earned worldwide fame and several reprints were published by the close of the 18th century. Based on a libretto by Thomas Morell, the first performance of this celebrated composition took place at the Royal Opera House in London on April 1st, 1747.
A re-orchestration of Judas Maccabaeus had been attributed to Mozart (similar to Messiah) around the late 1780s, although later scholars have ruled out it’s authenticity.
