First edition of ‘An amusing series of well colored Indian sporting pictures’ (Schwerdt I, 257). Bound in publisher’s brown morocco over marbled boards, gilt titles to spine; 41 hand-colored engravings, very good and unmarked condition. Oblong 4to.
Published in 1865 by J. Hogarth, this is a great pictorial chronicle of English and colonial hunting/big-game endeavors from the 19th century. Disguised as a travelogue, this remarkable book depicts an imaginary hunting journey of “Mr Brown” through 41 vividly hand-coloured lithographs drawn by Captain William Shapter Hunt, a British officer of the Bengal Cavalry.
Written as a satire, the plates represent common colonial hunting practices—tiger hunts from elephant-back, boar spearing, and fishing or fowling with Indian beaters—and depict the rugged terrains of northern India and in these pursuits, Mr Brown is chased by his prey, slips in the mud, or naps while locals do the real work. A fascinating hunting account with beautiful hand-colored images.
