About this Book
A stunning hand-colored (First thus) set of this monumental study of American birds by Wilson in near-fine condition, predating Audubon’s masterpiece much later.
3 volumes, 1832. 8vo. Bound in late 19th century red leather over marbled boards and marbled end pages, top edge gilt. Gilt trim on binding and on spine. Illustrated with handcolored plates of bird drawn by Wilson. Condition: Near fine. Lighting rubbing and occasional
spotting.
This was the first American work to use color plates to convey scientific information, and the first real combination of text and color illustration produced in the United States. The text is a reprint of Wilson’s original text including the later notes by Jardine as well as a reprint of the first three volumes (all then published) of Bonapartes American Ornithology. Early edition, first thus in this format.
