About this Map
FRAMED Rare German imprint of one of the most important 16th century maps of Goa, India, from de Bry’s masterpiece “Les Petit Voyages.”
“A Ilha e Cidade de Goa Metropolitana da India E Partes Orientais”, from Orientalische Indien. [Little Voyages. India, parts I-XIII, in German]. Caspar Rötel for Wilhelm Fitzer, Frankfurt, 1628.
First published in Amsterdam in 1596 (Linschoten’s “Itinerario, voyagie ofte Ship-vaert.”), the map is a detailed birdseye view and plan of Goa, showing the various streets and buildings of the city, the city’s riverine harbor, and the fields surrounding the city. This map precedes the foundation of the British East India Company (1600 AD) and serves as a firsthand historical document reflecting European trade interests in India, particularly by the Portuguese, Dutch and French empires. Goa, on the western part of India, served as the pre-eminent harbor for naval voyages related to trade and religion from the Western European nations for their “East India” missions.
This extremely rare map is from the rare description in German of 16th-century European exploration of Africa, the Middle East and South and East Asia, generally referred to as the Petits Voyages by de Bry.
