A stunning personal album of original watercolors compiled by Sir Edwin Arnold (1832-1904) during his travels across the world.
This international travel portfolio of the eminent English artist, poet, and author, famous for his monumental work on the life of Buddha in ‘The Light of Asia’ (1879), comprises of 30 original watercolor paintings with pencil inscriptions, descriptions of the places and initialed/signed. The travel drawings depict scenes in Calcutta and other parts of India, Scotland, Egypt, Ceylon, etc. Many of these watercolors bear the date in the 1880s.
Provenance- Letter by Julian Arnold, son of Sir Edwin Arnold, writing about gifting this album of sketches made by his father to one Miss Marli (or Harli), dated 16th Nov(?) 1890. The letter accompanies the album.
Condition- Spine is damaged with signs of wear and tear, darkened with light exposure, minor soiling. The watercolors are generally exceptionally bright despite age-related wear as usual.
