A relatively rare subscriber’s copy of the first edition of an interesting travel account to India.
First edition, list of subscribers, 17 lithographed plates, tissue guards, occasional spotting throughout with varying degree of foxing (one plate slightly heavier), illustrations in the text including a map hand-coloured in outline, an albumen print photograph of Calcutta town hall tipped in on front free endpaper, dried plant specimens pasted on 3 of the tissue guards, corners worn, small losses to spine ends [Abbey Travel 524; Mendelssohn IV, p.510], 4to, Croydon, John C. Anderson, 1859.
This self-published travel account provides an interesting glimpse of an independent journey across Africa, Ceylon and ultimately to various parts of India, with fine views including that of Ceylon, Madras, Calcutta, Bombay, Mauritius, Madeira, Tristan da Cunha, and South Africa.
Provenance: Harriet Basilico, 17 February 1862, ownership inscription. Mr. A. Basilico, of Hampstead is listed as one of the subscribers in the list.
